Spartina cynosuroides is a perennial C4 grass (Waller and Lewis 1979) 1-3 m tall, stems coarse, colonial from long stout rhizomes.
Leaves alternate, 0.8-2 cm wide, with rough, cutting margins.

Flower spikelets overlapping, dry, papery; inflorescence dense with numerous, crowded, one-sided spikes; blooming and fruiting Aug.-Oct.(Hough 1983).
Fruit dry 1-seeded.
Wetland status: OBL.
Frequency in NYC: Infrequent.
Origin: Native.
Habitat: Salt marshes and brackish water, Salt tolerant. soil pH 5.8-7.5 (USDA, NRCS 2010).
