Silphium perfoliatum is a perennial herb, 1-2.5 m tall, stem 4-sided.

Leaves opposite, leaf bases joined around stem, in a cup-like formation, blade to 30 cm long, 15 cm wide, margins toothed.

Flowers yellow, rays flowers 1.5-4 cm long, heads sun-flower-like, disk 1.5-2.5 cm wide, bracteate base 1.2-2.5 cm high; blooming July-Sept. 

Fruit dry, one-seeded achenes. 

Wetland status: FACU. 

Frequency in NYC: Very infrequent. 

Origin: Midwestern U.S. 

Habitat: Usually planted, in restorations. Fairly shade tolerant (M. Gargiullo pers.obs.)
