Potamogeton is a genus of aquatic, rooted, monocotyledon herbs; colonial from creeping rhizomes.

Leaves alternate, or occasionally, upper leaves subopposite especially if above water surface; veins parallel or single; base of leaf sheathed, sheath projecting above the leaf attachment as a ligule (as in Poaceae). In species that have floating leaves, those on the surface are different than those produced under water.
