Dichanthelium commutatum is a perennial C3 grass (Aliscioni et al. 2003), stems 30-80 cm long, often purplish, sometimes hairy; sheaths hair-at top, ligules inconspicuous.

Leaves lance-shaped, 5-12 cm long, 0.7-1.8 cm wide, mostly smooth but sparsely hairy at lobed, base, lobes clasping stem.

Flower spikelets 1-flowered, 0.2-0.3 cm long, sometimes finely hairy, blooms May-Aug.; primary inflorescence egg-shaped, 5-12 cm long, about as wide, primary inflorescence deciduous, late inflorescences smaller and partly hidden in sheaths, plants branched from middle and upper nodes; June-Nov.
Wetland status: FACU+.
Frequency in NYC: Very infrequent.
Origin: Native.
Habitat: Open woods, sandy or rocky open areas.
