Plantago is a genus of low, stalkless, annual or perennial herbs.

Leaves usually basal closely spiraled, but occasionally opposite along stem (Ppsyllium); blade simple, with parallel veins, stalk expanded, wing-like or as an extension of the blade (phyllodial).

Flowers small, green and membranous-brown, numerous, individually inconspicuous, 4-parted, sessile or nearly so surrounded by bracts, stamens often white; inflorescence of spikes or heads arising directly from the ground (scapose).i.e. the plant is stalkless as all the leaves are basal or along flowering stalk.

Fruit dry, a small achene, nut or capsule.
